Nintendo is still selling physical games for the Switch 2, but some cartridges don't actually contain the full game.
That's where Game-Key Cards come in. They look like traditional physical game cards but only contain a license key. Players must connect to the internet and download the actual game before they can play it. The card must also remain inserted in the console.
Nintendo continues to offer standard game cards that store the game itself, but buyers need to check the packaging to know which version they're getting.
For collectors and gamers who prefer physical ownership, the distinction is important. A Game-Key Card still gives you a physical card, but the game itself depends on a digital download.
