AYANEO is going back to basics with a tiny Android gaming handheld that takes heavy design cues from Nintendo’s classic Game Boy.
The company’s KONKR Pocket Block starts at $89, although early buyers can currently preorder the base model for $79. The vertical handheld is built primarily for retro gaming and emulation, combining a compact design with hardware aimed at older console libraries.
The device features a 3.3-inch LCD display with a 960 x 720 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. That screen shape is particularly suited to older games designed around more square displays.
Under the hood, the Pocket Block uses MediaTek’s Helio G85 processor. AYANEO pairs it with either 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The higher-capacity model starts at $99, while promotional pricing brings it down to $99 from an expected $109 retail price.
The hardware is clearly targeted at retro gaming rather than demanding modern titles. The Helio G85 should be suitable for older systems, while more demanding platforms such as PlayStation 2 and GameCube are likely beyond the device’s comfort zone.
AYANEO has also kept the design remarkably compact. The Pocket Block has a traditional vertical layout, but unlike many modern handheld gaming PCs, it skips analog sticks and focuses on a directional pad and physical buttons. Four shoulder buttons sit on the rear.
There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot for expanding storage. The handheld runs Android 12 and is expected to begin shipping toward the end of October.
The Pocket Block originally attracted attention for being promoted as an AI-focused handheld when AYANEO first revealed it. The company has yet to provide much detail about what those AI capabilities will actually deliver, however.
What stands out now is the price and the deliberately retro approach. Rather than competing with expensive PC gaming handhelds, the KONKR Pocket Block is aimed at players who want a small, inexpensive machine for revisiting classic games.
With its Game Boy-inspired proportions, 4:3 display and sub-$100 price, AYANEO is betting that retro gaming doesn't need powerful hardware or a large screen to remain appealing.
