Google is rolling out an offline mode for Live Translate, making it possible to hold real-time conversations in supported languages without an internet connection. The update could be particularly useful for travelers dealing with unreliable connectivity or expensive mobile data abroad.
The feature currently supports conversations between English and French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish. However, it does not yet support direct offline translation between two non-English languages.
There is also a significant hardware limitation. Google says offline Live Translate is available on the Pixel 9, Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 series, leaving older Pixel devices and phones from other manufacturers out for now.
For international travelers, having translation work without depending on a mobile connection could make a meaningful difference. Google’s next challenge will be expanding the feature to more languages and devices.
