Amazfit’s New T-Rex Watch Has a Solar Trick You Won’t See on Most Smartwatches

Amazfit has unveiled the T-Rex Dual Solar, an outdoor smartwatch that combines an AMOLED display with solar charging on both the front and back of the watch. The company calls it the world’s first AMOLED smartwatch with a dual-sided solar charging system.

The front solar surface collects energy while the watch is being worn outdoors, while a larger solar panel is built into the glass-ceramic back. Amazfit says the rear panel has twice the solar collection area of the front panel, giving users another way to recharge the watch when it is off the wrist.

The T-Rex Dual Solar offers up to 25 days of typical battery life. With three hours of daily sunlight at 50,000 lux, Amazfit says the front solar system can extend that to 34 days, while rear solar can take it to as much as 51 days.

The watch features a 1.32-inch AMOLED display with up to 3,000 nits of brightness, sapphire glass, a Grade 5 titanium bezel and 10 ATM water resistance. It also includes offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, dual-band positioning and more than 180 workout modes.

Amazfit is launching the T-Rex Dual Solar at $649.99, with availability beginning September 22 through Amazfit.com and Amazon.

Personal comment: Amazfit is taking an interesting approach to the battery-life problem by putting solar charging on both sides of the watch while keeping the bright AMOLED display.
