Samsung Display has unveiled its new M16 OLED technology, taking smartphone screen brightness to a peak of 10,000 nits and setting a new benchmark for mobile displays.
The milestone comes from a 6.9-inch panel with a 2560 × 1440 resolution and refresh rates of up to 165Hz. Samsung says the display can reach 10,000 nits within a small 1% portion of the screen, while full-screen white content reaches 2,800 nits.
That distinction is important. The 10,000-nit figure isn't representative of the brightness users will see across the entire display, but it demonstrates how far OLED technology is advancing. Samsung previously reached the 5,000-nit mark, making the latest jump particularly notable.
The bigger improvement may actually be happening behind the scenes. Samsung says its M16 material stack is about 30% more efficient than the previous M14 generation. The technology uses a second-generation polarizer-free design called Lead 2.0, which is intended to improve both light output and energy efficiency.
The panel also supports variable refresh rates up to 165Hz, increased colour volume and 3300Hz PWM dimming. The first confirmed smartphone to use the new display is Vivo's upcoming iQOO 16 gaming phone, while the technology is also expected to appear in future flagship devices.
For smartphone makers, the significance of M16 goes beyond simply making screens brighter. More efficient OLED technology could help manufacturers deliver brighter outdoor viewing and high-refresh-rate displays without putting as much pressure on battery life.
