Wireless earbuds may dominate the market, but Bose is betting that plenty of listeners still want the simplicity of plugging in and pressing play.
Bose has introduced its new Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, bringing active noise cancellation, USB-C connectivity and Bose audio technology to a product category that has largely taken a back seat to wireless headphones. The earbuds are priced at $99 and are scheduled to begin shipping October 15.
The biggest difference is what the earbuds leave out: there is no Bluetooth pairing and no internal battery to charge. Instead, the USB-C connection supplies both audio and power, allowing the noise cancellation system to work without requiring users to keep another device charged.
Bose says the earbuds use its QuietControl technology, powered by four microphones — two in each earbud — to monitor surrounding sounds and reduce unwanted noise. Users can switch between Quiet Mode, Aware Mode and ANC Off Mode depending on whether they want isolation, awareness of their surroundings or standard wired playback.
The direct USB-C connection also brings some advantages for people who watch videos, play games or create content. Bose says the earbuds support lossless audio and use USB Audio Class 2, with playback output reaching 24-bit/48kHz. The wired connection is also designed to minimize audio latency.
There is a physical in-line remote as well, giving users buttons for volume, playback, calls and noise-cancellation controls. A dedicated microphone positioned on the remote is designed to improve voice pickup while reducing interference caused by the cable rubbing against clothing.
The design itself is relatively compact, with a 4.2-foot cable and multiple ear-tip and stability-wing sizes for adjusting the fit. Bose is launching the earbuds in Black and White Smoke, along with a limited-edition Dewdrop Mint finish that leans into the current retro-tech trend. The earbuds are also IPX4-rated for water resistance and come with a zippered carrying case.
The return of wired audio is notable as consumers increasingly rediscover older technology and simpler ways of using their devices. Bose is taking that nostalgia a step further by combining the plug-and-play nature of traditional wired earbuds with features that were once largely associated with premium wireless headphones.
At $99, the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds are positioned as a relatively affordable way to get active noise cancellation without Bluetooth, wireless charging or another battery-powered device to manage.
