Google has introduced Home MCP, a new integration that allows AI agents to interact directly with devices connected to Google Home. The system uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to let compatible AI assistants understand a home's devices, monitor their real-time status and execute supported commands.
With Home MCP, users can ask an AI agent questions such as how many lights are connected, whether devices are online or what happened while they were away. The agent can also perform actions such as turning off lights, bringing AI beyond conversation and into the physical home.
Google says the system includes safety protections and rate limits, with sensitive actions such as unlocking doors prohibited. Users can also revoke an agent's access through Google Home or their Google Account.
The early-access rollout is aimed at Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the U.S., making this an interesting step toward a future where AI agents can not only answer questions but actively manage the spaces around us.
