Volkswagen has unveiled its Mission Efficiency prototype, a near-production electric vehicle designed to demonstrate how far EV efficiency can be pushed through aerodynamics, lightweight engineering and production-ready technology.
The prototype features an exceptionally low 0.158 drag coefficient, which Volkswagen says sets a record for road-approved vehicles. In an ideal test at 68 km/h, it consumed just 6.48 kWh per 100 km.
More notably, the Mission Efficiency completed a 1,278-kilometer journey from Wolfsburg to Vienna using its 54.9-kWh battery and requiring only one charging stop. The vehicle recorded consumption of 6.89 kWh/100 km excluding charging losses and arrived in Vienna with about 164 km of range remaining.
Volkswagen has also fitted the prototype with a 370-watt solar system, which can provide up to 30 km of additional range per day depending on conditions. The company says the project demonstrates how aerodynamic improvements and efficient production technology could help extend EV range without simply increasing battery size.
