Microsoft has confirmed that its September 2026 security updates can cause Remote Desktop Services (RDS) to stop functioning properly, potentially disrupting remote access to Windows systems.

The issue can initially appear normal before Remote Desktop connections begin failing after several minutes. In some cases, users may encounter sign-in failures or systems that remain stuck on the “Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration” screen.
The problem has been reported across several Windows Server versions following the September Patch Tuesday updates. Administrators have reported dropped sessions, failed connection attempts and RDS services becoming unresponsive.
Some administrators said rolling back the affected September updates restored Remote Desktop functionality, although doing so also removes the security fixes included in those updates. Microsoft said it was aware of the reports and was investigating the issue.
