South Korean gaming company Krafton is expanding its India strategy beyond gaming, committing another $250 million over the next three to four years to startups and businesses working in AI, robotics and deep tech.
The fresh commitment will take Krafton’s direct investment in India to roughly $500 million since 2021. The announcement followed a meeting between Krafton Chairman Byung Gyu Chang and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on September 4.
Krafton Looks Beyond BGMI
Krafton is best known in India for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), but the company is now looking to build a wider technology presence in the country.
The company has already backed around 18 Indian companies and is expanding its focus toward emerging technologies. Its investments have included gaming, consumer internet, media and other startups.
Krafton is also part of a $670 million India-focused growth fund with Naver and Mirae Asset, targeting high-growth startups across areas including AI, deep tech and gaming.
AI and Robotics Become Key Focus
The latest investment signals Krafton’s growing interest in areas beyond its traditional gaming business. The company plans to support Indian startups working on AI, robotics, physical AI and other deep-tech technologies.
Krafton is also launching the KIGI Academy with IIT Madras to help train the next generation of game-development and technology talent.
For Krafton, India is increasingly becoming more than a major gaming market. The company is now looking to tap into the country’s expanding startup ecosystem and growing pool of technology talent.
