Apple appears to be getting closer to entering the foldable smartphone market, with its first foldable iPhone expected to arrive as part of the company’s next major iPhone cycle.
The device, reportedly known as the iPhone Ultra, is expected to feature a book-style folding design with a large internal display and a slimmer outer screen. Apple is also reportedly working to make the foldable significantly thinner than many competing devices.
A Premium iPhone With a New Design
The foldable is expected to sit above Apple’s existing iPhone lineup and could carry a price tag of more than $2,000.
Apple is reportedly focusing heavily on the hinge and display crease, two areas that have remained major challenges for foldable phones. The company is also expected to use a titanium frame and a redesigned internal structure to keep the device relatively thin.
Some iPhone Features Could Change
The new design could force Apple to make changes to familiar hardware. Reports have suggested that the foldable may use Touch ID instead of Face ID, while its camera setup could differ from the company's Pro models.
Other reports indicate that Apple is still working to include features such as MagSafe despite the limited internal space.
If Apple manages to combine a thin design with its existing ecosystem, the foldable iPhone could become one of the company's biggest hardware launches in years.
