NHTSA Examines Tesla’s Safety Certification
NHTSA said it will review the technical data and processes Tesla used to certify the Cybercab. The investigation will also look at whether Tesla considered certain federal safety requirements inapplicable because the vehicle is designed to operate autonomously.
The agency stressed that automakers are responsible for certifying their vehicles, but NHTSA can investigate when questions arise over compliance with federal standards.
Cybercab Launch Puts Tesla Under Scrutiny
The probe comes as Tesla moves ahead with its plans for autonomous transportation. The company recently deployed driverless Cybercabs commercially in Austin, making regulatory compliance a key issue for its autonomous vehicle ambitions.
NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said the agency supports the development of automated vehicles but must ensure existing laws are followed.
The investigation could become an important test for Tesla as regulators determine how traditional vehicle safety rules should apply to cars designed without conventional controls.
